What is ageing skin?
As you age, your skin cell turnover rate drops and you may start to notice wrinkles, age spots, sagging, pigmentation and dryness. This is a completely normal and natural process, and none of these characteristics are signs that your skin is unhealthy. However, some people may want to prevent or reduce these visible signs of ageing, which is where effective anti-ageing products come in handy.
What causes premature ageing signs?
Skin ageing happens for many reasons. Some are within our control, others aren't. Your lifestyle and environmental aggressors, for example, can contribute to premature skin ageing — meaning your skin starts to age quicker than it would naturally.
When it comes to lifestyle factors, habits like smoking, excessive UV exposure, unhealthy dietary habits, excessive alcohol consumption and high stress levels can all decrease skin elasticity and collagen production.
What are the best skincare products for mature skin?
A restorative facial oil like our Retinol Complex Oil is a great treatment for ageing skin. Packed full of age-defying vitamin A, this gentle yet powerful formula improves the look of fine lines and wrinkles, while smoothing out your skin texture, protecting against free radical damage and locking in moisture.
A vitamin C serum is another great option for mature skin. We love our Vitamin C + Ferulic Serum, as it helps slow down ageing, boost skin's radiance, improve skin texture and encourage collagen production for skin cell renewal.
Finally, sunscreen is a non-negotiable in any skincare routine for ageing skin. It helps to keep age spots at bay and protect your skin against the loss of elasticity that can be caused by UV rays.
When should you start using anti-ageing skincare products?
There's no set answer to this question, but if you're looking to slow down the skin's ageing process, you can start using ageing products in your 30s or even mid-20s. Remember, as well, that your lifestyle is the foundation for healthy, youthful skin. So, make sure your daily habits work with your anti-ageing skincare, and not against it.
What are the best ingredients for reducing ageing signs?
Retinol is one of the best anti-ageing skincare ingredients. It stimulates collagen and elastin production, which gradually drops as we age, helping to maintain skin firmness and reduce the appearance of ageing signs.
Vitamin C is also crucial for mature skin, as it cultivates collagen production in both young and aged skin while targeting uneven skin tone and protecting your skin against the sun. Paired with ferulic acid, it becomes even more powerful.
To combat the dryness that often comes with ageing skin, hyaluronic acid delivers long-lasting hydration and studies have shown that it can reduce wrinkle depth and increase elasticity [1]. Niacinamide is also excellent and, similar to hyaluronic acid, it is gentle on the skin, which makes both active ingredients a stellar option for all skin types — including sensitive skin.
Software's Advanced Ageing Kit includes several of these skincare ingredients to soften signs of ageing and increase elasticity for your healthiest, most radiant skin yet.
How can you minimise deep wrinkles?
Acetyl hexapeptide-8 is a great skincare ingredient for those wanting to target deep wrinkles around the eye area — so much so that it is often compared to Botox. If your main skin concerns are crow's feet, dark circles and puffiness, our Multi-Peptide Eye Serum is formulated with acetyl hexapeptide-8, as well as sodium hyaluronate and glycerin, to rejuvenate the delicate skin around our eyes.
If you've tried topical anti-ageing treatments and nothing seems to work, speaking to a dermatologist may be the best next step. Software's Clinical Strength Ageing Treatment is made-to-order based on your skin goals, treating wrinkles, dark spots and uneven skin for a renewed complexion and better skin health.
How often should I use this scrub?
Start by using it once a week to allow your skin to adjust. Depending on your skin's sensitivity, you can gradually increase to up to three times use per week.
Can I use this on my face?
This product is formulated specifically for body skin, which is thicker than facial skin. For facial exfoliation, we recommend our Salicylic Foaming Wash.
Can I use this on blemish-prone skin?
Absolutely. The 2% salicylic acid is especially beneficial for improving the appearance of body blemishes, as it helps cleanse pores and soothe the skin.
Will this scrub help with ingrown hairs?
Yes. Regular exfoliation with our Hydroxy-Complex Body Scrub helps improve the appearance of ingrown hairs by removing surface cells that can trap hairs beneath the skin. It's particularly effective when used before and after hair removal.
Does this product contain plastic microbeads?
No. Our exfoliating particles are made from hydrated silica and jojoba esters, which are biodegradable and environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic microbeads.
Is this product good for sensitive skin?
As this product contains salicylic acid, it may lead to skin sensitivity for some individuals. We recommend starting with using it once a week to allow your skin to adjust. Depending on your skin's sensitivity, you can gradually increase to up to three times use per week. Monitor your skin for irritation, rashes, burning or severe peeling. If you notice any of these signs, please discontinue use and see a healthcare professional.
Can I use this daily?
For most skin types, yes. However, we recommend starting with 2-3 times weekly and gradually increasing to daily use as your skin adjusts to the active ingredients.
Should I use moisturiser after this body wash?
While our formula is hydrating, following with a moisturising body lotion will enhance benefits and further nourish your skin. For best results, apply the body lotion to slightly damp skin after showering.
Will this make my skin more sensitive to the sun?
AHAs like glycolic acid can increase your skin's sensitivity to UV rays. We recommend applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed areas daily, especially when using exfoliating products.
Can I use this if I have oily skin?
Yes! Despite being an oil formula, this product is lightweight and non-comedogenic. The niacinamide helps maintain balanced oil levels, making it beneficial for oily and combination skin types.
Will this make my skin more sensitive to the sun?
Unlike some exfoliating ingredients, vitamin C is an antioxidant that complements the efficacy of your sunscreen. However, we still recommend using a broad-spectrum SPF daily, such as our Daily Sun Defence SPF50+, for optimal skin protection.
Can I use this with other active ingredients like retinol or AHAs?
Yes, this formula pairs well with most skincare ingredients. For retinoid users, we recommend using the Vitamin C & Niacinamide Oil in the morning and retinoids at night for optimal results.
Why is this formulated as an oil rather than a water-based serum?
Vitamin C can destabilise in water-based formulations. Our oil-based formula ensures stability and quality for the full life of the product.
How should I store this product?
While more stable than water-based vitamin C serums, we still recommend storing this oil away from direct sunlight and heat to maintain maximum quality.
Does this oil feel greasy on the skin?
No, our formula is designed to absorb quickly without leaving a greasy residue. You may experience a slight warming sensation upon application, which is normal and indicates the product is working.
Are there any side effects when using this product?
You may experience a mild warming sensation upon application. This is normal. However, if you experience severe burning, redness, peeling, or swelling, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional.
